Inspirations from the Past - Tacoma

About This Performance

Joseph Swensen returns to the stage as both conductor and soloist, curating a program of European works composed in the 1920s and 30s.  After the horrors of the First World War, many artists sought refuge in the art of centuries past, from the Italian commedia dell’arte figure in Stravinsky’s Pulcinella Suite to the Renaissance paintings of Botticelli.  Opening the program is Holst’s energetic St. Paul’s Suite, with infectious jigs just in time for St. Patrick’s Day weekend.  Ravel’s Tzigane, drawing from the ancient sounds of the Roma people, ends the program with Mr. Swensen leading the orchestra as the violin soloist.
